Sad day. An overused word is applicable here. Legend.

RE: Geoff Duke RIP - captainsparkledotcom - 02-05-2015

RIP Mr. Duke.
We had the pleasure of meeting him at the TT launch meeting a few years ago, a really nice gentleman.

Just spent the past half hour or so trying to verify this story, but there isn't a mention of it on any website, just social media postings.

RE: Geoff Duke RIP - spannerman - 02-05-2015

I'll never forget the time he once took to tell me a story, thank you Geoff, RIP

I heard from a friend on the Island, but it has been reported on Bike Sport News and MCN.

Keith Huewan just mentioned on BT Sports.... sad news indeed.

RE: Geoff Duke RIP - sticky - 02-05-2015

A long life very well lived.

Without disrespecting Bob Mac's achievement I always believed that Geoff Duke was the first to do the 100mph lap.  Such was the nature of the British motor-cycling establishment in the mid-50s they simply refused to believe it had been done and down-graded his lap to 99.97mph.

Racing legend Geoff Duke OBE passes away aged 92

Six-time World Champion and six-time TT winner Geoff Duke OBE (born 29 March 1923) sadly passed away at the age of 92 on Friday.

Known affectionately by fans as The Duke, Englishman Geoff Duke OBE was a six-time World title winner and the first rider whose image was used to promote the World Championship internationally, after he sprang to prominence in the early 1950s.

Duke retired from the World Championship at the end of the 1959 season at the age of 36, with an enviable record of six World titles and 33 Grand Prix victories. Duke is also credited as the first motorcycle racer to wear one-piece leathers & was awarded an OBE in 1953.

Geoff Duke OBE will be forever remembered for his outstanding contribution to the world of motorcycle racing.

RE: Geoff Duke RIP - Jan Grainger - 02-05-2015

It was like Royalty arriving in Australia when Geoff Duke came here to race in 1955. He certainly made an impact on the sport and was highly respected here in Oz. My father's idol. RIP Geoff Duke.

RE: Geoff Duke RIP - Splashdown - 02-05-2015

It's hard for younger folk to know what an International star Geoff was in the fifties. He was an absolute superstar.
He will never be forgotten.
My sympathy to his family.

I s'pose this is really a suggestion to the IOM Goverment / TT organizing committee.

I believe that Geoff Dukes memory should be remembered in a appropriate manner. Can I suggest that the "authorities" with some haste, consider something in the manner of a Bronze statue be commisioned of Geoff that perhaps has a perminent position in the TT grandstand area. I dont know if it is possible to get such a thing designed and cast before the TT, but I would certainly think that it is possible to have it finished by the Classic / Manx. I also feel that this is something that the Isle of Man goverment should pay for. Geoff over the years through his racing and othere activities bought a lot of people over to the IOM TT and the authorities should appreciate and recognize this.

Perhaps somebody from the "authorities" could reply to this post and say that they have seen it and perhaps doing something about it.

Geoff Dukes memory should and must be remembered in a appropriate manner

Duke Video have produced a small homage to Geoff on there You Tube channel.
I love the quote 'He was as smooth as water running out of a tap'

RE: Geoff Duke RIP - bsa499 - 04-05-2015

Geoff Duke mastered the TT and the GP scene and a great deal of his success was achieved on British machinery. The best motorcycle racer of his era he was treated badly by the motorcycle race establishment after supporting a riders strike at the 1955 Dutch TT. A man of principal, a sporting hero, a motorcycle racing legend. Not a bad epitaph is it?
