Glenn Irwin is targeting his return to the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch next weekend (July 21/22/23) as the Be Wiser Ducati rider continues his recovery from his Knockhill injuries.

Irwin had been holding a position within the top six in the standings and had featured on the podium twice before a crash in free practice at Knockhill left him with shoulder and elbow fractures plus dislocations.

The 27-year-old has been undergoing various treatments since the crash in a bid to return to the track next weekend as he still remains focused on fighting back into a Showdown position by the end of the Silverstone decider in September.

Irwin said:

“I have been doing everything I can to be back for Brands Hatch and I will be going with the intention of riding, but of course I need to pass a medical first and then seeing how it goes on track. I did about 70 or 80 laps on a road bike at Mondello to see how it felt and some areas felt better than others.

“We have a test before Brands Hatch so I can evaluate it further and there will have been another eight days between the last riding I did and our test, so in theory it should feel better again.

“I couldn’t possibly have done more to try and get back to a level of fitness to race; I have been in the hyperbaric chamber, had Chinese medicine, physio, acupuncture and laser which should all stimulate the muscles to help speed up the recovery time.

“I have also been using a Zamar machine, which is like a temperature related treatment to try and speed up the recovery so thank you to the championship medical team for that. So I guess you can say there isn’t anything I haven’t tried to try and get myself back! I have also kept up some of my training; not what I would normally do, but you have to try and keep yourself going.

“I like a challenge and I am determined to get back racing as soon as possible. My goal remains to be in the top six for the Showdown and that is what I am focused on achieving.”

The sixth round of the 2017 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship takes place at Brands Hatch on July 21 - 23 for the Big Brands Bash!
