Former motorsport boss appointed

The former head of UK motorsport's governing body will lead an investigation into the collision between a TT rider and a course car during this year's event.

Lawyer and ex-Motor Sport Association boss Rob Jones previously led an inqury into four spectator deaths at two rallies in Scotland.

The incident involving Kent rider Steve Mercer happened on May 30, while he was travelling back to the grandstand anti-clockwise around the course.

The course car was en route to Dan Kneen's fatal accident at Churchtown.

Mercer suffered severe injuries, and remains in a Liverpool hospital in what's described as a 'serious, but stable' condition.

ACU Events Limited officially announced the inquiry yesterday.

The organisation says the investigation 'will identify lessons to be learnt' and make recommendations on 'race organisation and safety matters' for future events.

It's expected it will take 'several weeks', with conclusions due later in the summer.
