Seven-time Isle of Man TT winner Tony Rutter has sadly passed away.

His son Michael announced the news on Tuesday.

In a statement, he said:

“It is with sadness that after a period of poor health, dad passed away earlier today. I was with him when he died at about 2am and he was very peaceful.

“It makes me smile how dad lived his life exactly how he wanted to and how he got away with so much. He will probably be best remembered for winning the world TT-F2 championship four times on a Ducati, as well as seven Isle of Man TT wins, nine North West 200 wins, and two British championship titles during his 22 year career.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to his carers for taking such good care of him and all his fans and supporters.”

Very, very sad news Michael. I was very pleased, however to have witnessed him racing in the Island over several years, and particularly enjoyed watching his very determined expression and steadfast eyes through my binoculars from the balcony of the Creg-Ny-Bar hotel.

RIP Tony

A hero of mine from my school days, a winner on short circuits and road circuits, he could competitively ride anything, anywhere, Michael has very much followed in his fathers footsteps in that respect.

Over the years whenever I saw Michael I always asked how Tony was getting on, RIP Tony, a sad loss.

F2 racing days were very good with a good bunch of lads and camradery, wish we had a cost effective championship with competitive 2 & 4 strokes like that these days.

Tony Rutter a wonderful motorcycle racer on track or on the roads. He was also one of the first to successfully change from British 4 strokes to Japanese 2 strokes with marvellous effect. His years on the Bob Priest Yamahas were incredibly successful he then switched back to 4 strokes for more incredible success on the Formula 2 Ducatis. He was a racer I really enjoyed watching as I do his equally talented son Michael. He is a great loss, but he leaves a fantastic legacy.

Sad to hear that one of the greats has passed on.
Had talked to Tony many times when he was racing, and when he came to the Isle of Man to ride in the parade laps.
RIP Tony.
