1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - koala27 - 05-05-2020

A request for help from those with long memories on the forum!

1984 was my one & only visit to the TT. I had a great time and I took quite a few pics while I was there. All these years later and now I'm trying to scan them in and digitise the negatives. I now realise that while I recognise some of the bikes & riders, there's a few for which I don't have a clue! I just have a picture of (for example) bike no 39 - no idea of rider or machine!

The iomtt site has the results for all the races in 1984, but it doesn't tell me the bike numbers, just the name and machine. All I've got in the picture is a number. I'm sure I bought a programme & raceguide in 84 while I was on the island but it's been lost over the years.

So I'm hoping you forum members can help me identify some of them? I really need the riders name if possible please.

Just to confirm - I'm not a professional photographer and I don't plan to sell any of the resulting pics. Frankly I don't think they're of a sufficient quality anyway!

So first pic - bike number 39 from the Senior, anybody recognise the rider?

The helmet colours and what looks like 'ER' on the lid makes me think that's Eddie Roberts. The bike would be a Yamaha TZ350 - possibly slightly over-bored to something like 352cc to make eligible for the Senior.

We'll take all of these you can throw at us koala - love this stuff!

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - Moderator2 - 05-05-2020

I'd go with Eddie too on this one

Edit, just done a quick search of other images from those years and yes, definitely Eddie Roberts.

Next?

Nice work guys, thanks very much. That was quicker than I expected! And indeed, when I look at the iomtt results it shows Eddie Roberts on a Yamaha as a DNF. Cool.

OK next shot is from the paddock area round the back of the pits, taken I think just after the finish of the Senior. There's 3 bikes in the pic and I'm pretty sure No 38 is the Suzuki of Mark Johns (it's written on it!) who came 5th. But what about numbers 70 & 73? Any ideas?

Cheers

73 has Allen Jefferies in the side of it and it looks like Nick’s helmet on top?

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - Alfie Noakes - 06-05-2020

I'd hazard a good guess that 73 looking at the helmet design is Nick Jefferies - the RG 500 in trad BMW Motorrad / Sport Allan Jefferies dealer colours must be Nick but prepared to be wrong.

Cheating slightly just checked the results No 70 - the early model NS500 triple 2-poke but late starter number 70 could be Peter Linden ?.

Another piece of lovely memory looking at the 1984 results is the late Sam McClements on a Keen RG500 Suzuki - at the moment i'm helping Mark Keen the son of the late Roger Keen prepare/restore some of the various racing TZ / RG 2-strokes that Roger collected over many decades at his workshop in Aston Clinton.

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - sticky - 06-05-2020

#73 is certainly Nick's bike.  I'd go with Peter Linden for #70 too.  Wasn't he in the Swedish Air Force and used to fly all his stuff over in a C130?

#Edit: You can see 'Flygvapnet' on the Honda RS500, which is the Swedish Air Force, so that's definitely Peter Linden's bike

And I think the guy in the Suzuki overalls might be Nigel Everett, long time spanner man to Mick Grant

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - Alfie Noakes - 06-05-2020

There's something very intrinsically special about those pics from back then, aside from all being multi-cylinder 2-strokes it's the way the machines are just laid to rest against the wooden posts after finishing with the rider's lid on the bike and the mutual excited chit-chat that goes on after finishing with other riders, crew, fans etc.... love it.

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - sticky - 06-05-2020

At the risk of being a real nerd...The rear of the blue & green RG500 in the top left of the frame - I think woukd be John Robinson's bike

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - Splashdown - 06-05-2020

Yes that's my RG500 no.73. My first TT, think I finished 9th from the back of the field. No priority given then for winning the Senior Manx the previous year! And proof as I've said many times, that your starting number doesn't really matter, although you'd probably go for an earlier number if you had the choice.
It was a really good bike. Bought it off Padgetts. They said Gary Padgett had raced it and broke his leg at Silverstone.
Yes, that's Nigel Everett, and yes that'll be either Peter Linden or Peter Skold's bike, the RS500.
Lovely photo, and brings back memories. By the time that photo was taken, we were probably all cheesed in the beer tent!

Wow I'm very grateful  for the quick and detailed info, many thanks to all for the replies and especially to Nick confirming his own bike - superb!

Next up are a couple more from the Senior, numbers 36 and 17:

Please keep this thread going guys. It's brilliant.
Haven't been this excited since last year's TT 😂

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - Splashdown - 07-05-2020

36 Geoff Johnson, and 17 Dave Dean.

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - Rednine - 07-05-2020

As Ago/MH says, yes please, do keep going. Great stuff.

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - Moderator2 - 07-05-2020

Beat me to it Splashdown!! Dave Dean is on an RG500 and Geoff Johnson is on either a TZ350 or possibly a 500 Zegers which he had around that time.

F*ck me that was quick! I'm obviously making them too easy. Many thanks for the very fast response Nick.

OK so next up I've got a couple of sidecar pics, numbers 27 and 35, anyone know who they are:

This is a brilliant thread koala. I can't say I've scored 100% so far but I'm really enjoying it.

RE: 1984 TT - anybody recognise these riders/bikes? - sticky - 08-05-2020

I'm going to take a punt at Warwick Newman & Alan Warner on the green/white outfit.  It's an Ireson outfit with either a TZ750 or TZ700 motor and I recall the driver racing a green & white bike.  Can't think who the other one is though...

Loving the scoreboard people, speed/time painters, cubs & scouts and a set of ladders all in the road or dangling legs over the side of the scoreboard .... they were proper days - fab pics, thanks Koala.
