Super fan Ron - pykey - 03-04-2008

I know there are some superfans in our sport but does anyone know the whereabouts of Ron who used to dress in a Davy Crocket hat, last time i seen him was about 4 yrs ago at the Gold Cup?

RE: Super fan Ron - Tom Loughridge - 03-04-2008

Used to dress up as a few things in his time, saw him in the paddock at the Imola 200 dressed up as an Arab Shiek really looked the part and wold have fooled anyone who did not know him, funny never saw him dressed up as a transexual though probably did not want to shave the beard..

Not heard of him for a few years now.

Tom at Olvers Mount he had a shirt on also he worked as a courier i think at one time but he was a wealth of knowledge and used to marshall at Gorse Lea, whatever meeting you attended he was always to be seen from Brands to Oulton.

do you mean Ron Birch? I last saw him at Snetterton BSB last year but he's stayed in touch with my folks for years, usually with an annual phone call at Christmas - I think he spoke to my mum then

cheers

I've always struggled with the phrase super fan - how would you define it? My dad paid to go everywhere for over 40 years and did so cos he loved motorbike racing but there's loads out there that have probably never paid to get into a meeting once, I'd say Ron would fall into the latter...

RE: Super fan Ron - pykey - 03-04-2008

Point taken Phil your dad was a exeption as you and i know but in any sport you will get the hangers on brigade? in fact i got lucky a few times and it was amazing the tricks folk got up to perhaps others have tales to tell about this? EG: how many could you fit in the back of a van.

Hi Pykey,

A bearded gentleman in a Davy Crockett, may be the Ron that you refer to, and was marshalling at Cronk Breck (adjoining Gorse Lea) in TT 2007. He was a gentleman of ample proportions, wearing large spectacles, and carried a walking pole. Could he be the Ron? smilie

If you have access to the TT Centenary Celebration DVD you will see him featured as he ropes off the Kennaa lane as the roads closed.

Regards,
John
