History in the Making

Dry and sunny conditions, with a strong wind were the conditions conveyed to the competitors prior to the start of the combined Lightweight & Ultra Lightweight Manx Grand Prix by the Clerk of the Course, prior to an announcement that there would be 30 minute delay due to debris on the course at Glen Vine.

Promptly at 1045 Neil Kent and 2008 winner Dan Sayle set off together, with the latter taking an initial advantage.

Two and a half minutes later Joe Phillips and Rab Davie got the Ultra Lightweight class underway.

At the end of the first 37.73-miles, Dan Sayle led on the road and on time by less than a second from Davy Morgan, with Nigel Moore third.
In the Ultra Lightweight category it was Joe Phillips three seconds ahead of Brian Purdy and Ivan Lintin.

Pits stops came into play at the end of the second lap of four, Dan Sayle and Neil Kent pitted together. The former in the led on time by 1.3 seconds. Davy Morgan was third, after Nigel Moore had retired during the second lap, having taken the lead at the time.

Brian Purdy headed the second class by 10 seconds from Mike Minns, with Carolynn Sells holding onto third from Ivan Lintin.

Lap three, and Sayle was ahead by the merest of margins, 0.38 of a second from Kent with Morgan holding third.

Senior Race Report

The blue-riband event of the Manx Grand Prix, the Senior got underway at the re-scheduled time of 1330, due to the delayed start of the preceding race. No. 2 Philip McGurk led the way with No. 1 Scott Wilson in tow.

At the end of the opening lap of four, Ryan McCay headed the field with a lap of 20m 13.51s, 111.930mph, from Michael Russell, Sean Murphy, Ryan Kneen, Noel Patterson and Scott Wilson.

A brief downpour brought a number of riders in to the pits to retire and the end of the first lap, but at the front McCay's lead was being reduced as Michael Russell gained on the roads and time, so by the end of the half distance lap and pit stop time Ryan was in front of Michael by 0.30 of a second, with Newcomers A victor Sean Murphy now in third.

At three-quarter distance McCay was still leading on the road and time enjoying a seven second lead over Michael Russell with Sean Murphy still holding third. Ryan Kneen, Scott Wilson and Ivan Lintin completed the top six.

Ryan McCay went out at the Mountain Box, letting Michael Russell into the lead and taking the chequered flag from Newcomers’ A winner Sean Murphy, with Ryan Kneen third four seconds down. Fourth was Ivan Lintin, fifth Simon Fulton and sixth Philip McGurk.

There were a number of incidents during this afternoons race, non serious.

Four riders were taken to Nobles Hospital by AirMed:-

Paul Lawson (Mountain Box),
Noel Patterson (Sulby Bridge),
Frank James (approaching Sulby Bridge),
Ryan McCay (Mountain Box).

Adrian Logue was off at Quarter Bridge and taken to hospital by ambulance for a check up.

Didn't Gail Musson win the 125 class a few years ago? and what about Anita Buxton or, can't remember her name was something like Barnett. Here was me thinking one of them two won a race at the Manx as well? I stand to be well corrected on this though. Dodgy

Yes, I was there when Ms. Sandra Barnett competed in the 1990 TT. I remember driving though her town of Evesham that year after the event. I am in awe of all the ladies whether it was the TT or the Manx. Absolutey amazing.
