Jakub Smrz fired the Splitlath Redmond Racing Aprilia to the top of the timesheets for the first time this season in the final MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship free practice session at Assen ahead of qualifying.

Smrz makes his debut with the team here this weekend and waited until the final minute to storm ahead of Title Fighter Shane 'Shakey' Byrne who had just put the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki to the top of the times with just over a minute remaining.

Josh Brookes ended the session third fastest despite the Tyco Suzuki rider crashing out with 30 minutes remaining at turn five; he was able to complete the final laps of the session to put himself back up the order in preparation for this afternoon's race one grid decider. Noriyuki Haga was just edged out by the Australian after improving in his last stint to move fifth ahead of team-mate Tommy Hill, who had set the pace before a light falling of rain briefly passed by the legendary circuit.

Alex Lowes was sixth fastest ahead of the leading Supersonic BMW of Patric Muff whilst Barry Burrell leapt up to eighth on the Buildbase BMW to remain ahead of Luca Scassa and Tommy Bridewell who completed the ten.
