Selwyn Griffiths, winner of the Senior Manx Grand Prix in 1964 is to be the Manx Motor Cycle Club’s Official Guest of Honour at this year’s Manx Grand Prix which takes place between 16th and 29th August and is part of the Festival of Motorcycling Festival 2014.

Selwyn, who originates from Pontypool, is well known around race paddocks throughout the British Isles and is still a familiar face in the race paddock at the rear of the Grandstand on Glencrutchery Road some fifty years after his illustrious victory on Thursday 3rd September 1964 riding a Cowles Matchless at an average speed of 96.270 mph.

Having made his ‘Manx’ debut three years earlier in the Junior race he finished in 22nd position just missing out on a replica.

1962 saw the Welshman entered again in the Junior Manx Grand Prix, this time coming home 4th and achieving his first coveted silver replica.

Moving up to the Senior Manx Grand Prix in 1963 the following year, 1964 he achieved the Manx Grand Prix riders ultimate dream, seeing his name added to one of the most coveted trophies in motorcycle sport, the Senior Manx Grand Prix Trophy.

On his TT debut in 1965, Selwyn impressed with a 5th place in the Senior collecting his first TT Silver Replica, having earlier in the week gained a Bronze Replica for 19th place in the Junior TT.

Riding for the Welsh Wizard, Ray Cowles he competed in the TT up to and including 1975, where he gained his only podium finish for 3rd place in the Production TT.

His TT career saw him compete in 28 races, finishing 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th twice.

1987 saw the popular Welshman return to the Manx Grand Prix racing in the Classic Classes, once again mounted on the famous red and green Cowles Matchless machines Selwyn achieved two podium positions in the Senior Classic races in 1987 and 1989.

Hanging up his well used leathers after the 1991 Manx Grand Prix, Selwyn had by then ridden in four Manx Grand Prix races achieving a win, a 4th and a 22nd, followed by a Classic Manx tally of three 3rd places and a 7th place.

Away from the SnaefellMountain Course, Selwyn Griffiths also won the 1966 Southern 100 Solo Championship on the Billown Course in the south of the Isle of Man.

His son Jason, also now well known in road racing circles with his connections with Pirelli, followed in his father’s race-lines winning the 1991 Newcomer’s Race at the Manx Grand Prix, following that with two wins in the Classic Junior Races in 2000 and 2003.

The Manx Motor Cycle Club very much looks forward to welcoming Selwyn Griffiths as Official Guest of Honour at the 2014 Manx Grand Prix.
