Dean lad Michael Dunlop and Dan Kneen

Dean Harrison won the Southern 100 solo championship for the first time on Thursday afternoon.

Having suffered electrical problems with his 1000cc Silicone Engineering Kawasaki in two of the earlier three big bike races, the Bradford ace finally got some luck to win a thrilling nine-lapper by 0.131 of a second from local star Dan Kneen.

The latter, who had grabbed three runner-up slots behind Michael Dunlop in the earlier encounters, beat Dunlop on this occasion.

Michael had to settle for three wins and a second on the Suzuki, but he did go home with a new outright lap record for the 4.25 mile course of 115.707mph, a time of 2min 12.231sec.

Harrison also completed a 600cc double, while Ivan Lintin scored a similar success in the 650/250 class.

There was controversy in the Manx Gas Sidecar championship race when Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes and brothers Ben and Tom Birchall had a hefty collision rounding Cross Four Ways for the final time.

It ended with Reeves’s outfit flipping over spectacularly, but miraculously no one was seriously injured in the incident.

The race was red flagged (with less than half a lap remaining) and the result declared in favour of third-placed crew John Holden and local passenger Lee Cain as the red flags came out for an incident involving the leading two pairs.

Seven-time world champion Reeves later slated Ben Birchall for ’ramming’ his and passenger Wilkes’s outfit, causing it to turn over, but said he would return to the meeting next year.
