Evans takes record-breaking Mylchreests Junior MGP win

The Isle of Man’s Michael Evans, riding the Martin Bullock Motorsport Kawasaki, won a restarted Mylchreests Group Junior Manx Grand Prix on the Isle of Man today. With six of the top ten riders from last year’s corresponding race lining up, a close encounter for the podium places was expected for the podium places and so it proved.

After the race a delighted Evans said:

“It was tough after the restart and was tight all round the first lap.  After the pits when I got p3 plus 18 I thought I’d picked up a penalty in the pits and then I worked it out that it would come good on the third lap.  I didn’t get it right going into the pits which was inexperience which cost us but I’ll learn.”

Evans got off to a flyer in the original race, breaking Malachi Mitchell-Thomas’s Junior MGP lap record with an opening lap of 121.066, establishing a ten second lead, before a red flag incident at Union Mills resulted in the race being stopped.

The rider involved - Australian Royce Rowe - was taken by ambulance to Nobles Hospital with reported leg injuries where his condition was described as stable and not causing concern at this stage.

The restarted race - which was reduced to three laps following the delay caused by clearing debris, oil and making a live street light which had fallen into the road safe - got underway at 12.10 and Andrew Farrell, a three time MGP podium finisher, was first away from the Glencrutchery Road start line.

Tom Robinson, who was the eighth fastest qualifier but who retired at Glen Duff in the original race, was a non-starter while French rider Frederic Besnard, who slid off at Governors on his opening lap, was able to take part in the restarted race following a medical check.

Farrell was first on the road at Glen Helen but was closely followed by Darren Cooper who moved into the lead 3.5 seconds ahead of Cooper. However Michael Evans, as he had done in the first race, came through from seventeenth on the grid to top the board at the first sector, three seconds ahead of Cooper.  Charles Rhys Hardisty was 2.5 seconds back in third with Jamie Williams and Joe Faragher completing the top five.  Fellow Manx rider Dean Osborne, the fastest qualifier, was sixth, less than a second behind Faragher.

Brad Vicars, who won last night’s Newcomers A race was going well and moved up to fifth place at Ballaugh from seventh at Glen Helen, only 0.2 down from fourth placed man Williams but a significant gap was emerging at the front of the field with Michael Evans lead extended to almost ten seconds ahead of second placed man Darren Cooper.

Pit stops were at the rider’s discretion on either lap 1 or lap 2 but Clerk of the Course advised competitors to be careful of approaching riders when exiting pit lane.

Darren Cooper was first through the Grandstand with an opening lap of120.018 - which eventually placed him in second place - and elected to run straight through.  Michael Evans came into the pits on the first lap after clocking a new lap record of 120.619 to lead the restarted race after his lap record in the first race was scrubbed from the books when the original race was stopped.

Joe Faragher, who slotted into third place after his opening lap of 119.413, also chose to run through at the end of the first lap, while Williams (119.241) and Osborne (118.501) who completed the top five both pitted which meant that the true race position would only be revealed at Glen Helen on the third lap.

At Glen Helen on the second lap, Cooper was the new race leader five seconds ahead of Joe Faragher, with Richard Charlton third a further eighteen seconds back. Michael Evans was now fourth, 33 seconds behind the race leader with Jamie Williams, twelve seconds down on Evans, completing the top five.

With Cooper (119.487), Joe Faragher (118.390) and Charlton (116.804) all pitting at the end of the second lap, it was all change on the leader board and Charlton’s 30 second penalty for speeding in the pit lane dropped him even further down the timings.

Evans regained the lead after his second lap of 118.390 and at Glen Helen he was 24 seconds ahead of Cooper with Jamie Williams, who clocked 115.798 on his second lap now in the final podium place. Barry Lee Evans and Dean Osborne completed the top five.

Evans clinched the race with a last lap of 119.966 to win by 22 seconds in a race time of 57.02.400/ 119.064 from Darren Cooper (57:24.422/ 118.303) with Jamie Williams (57:30.208/ 118.104) taking the final podium place.  Barry Lee Evans (57:35.702/ 117.916) and Dean Osborne (57:46.130/ 117.562) completed the top five with three of the top five riders – Evans, Williams and Osborne - from the Isle of Man

Three riders – Michael Evans, Cooper and Glenn Harrison joined the prestigious ‘Tommy’ Club – named after former MGP winner Tommy Clucas – after posting their first 120mph+ laps while last night’s MGP Newcomer A race winner Brad Vicars was the first newcomer home in 9th place.  All thirteen newcomers who started the race finished.

Brendan Fargher was reported to be OK after sliding off at Windy Corner.

Darren Cooper seals maiden Manx Grand Prix title with victory in MGP Supporters Club Lightweight race

Preston’s Darren Cooper went one better by following up his runner-up place in this morning’s MGP Junior Race with his maiden Manx Grand Prix in this afternoon’s MGP Supporters Club Lightweight Race.

With number 1 rider Jonathan Perry withdrawing with injury from a qualifying incident on his Senior machine last week, Cooper was first away from Glencrutchery Road in the third race of the 2017 Manx Grand Prix.

Cooper was first on the road to Glen Helen but Andrew Farrell, the fastest qualifier, soon passed him on the clock to lead by just over a second with Marc Ironside less than half a second further back in third at the first timing point. Barry Lee Evans was almost two seconds off the podium places in fourth with Spain’s Victor Lopez Santos less than a second further back in fifth.

Farrell’s opening lap of 113.498 gave him a 3.5 second lead from Cooper (113.170) with Barry Lee Evans (112.729) holding the final podium position.  Gary Vines, riding a Yamaha two stroke was fourth in 112.369 with Jamie Williams (112.318) completing the top five.

The race was building into an absolute thriller as the riders headed onto the mountain section on the second lap with less than a second separating race leader Farrell from second placed rider Cooper, who was clearly on a charge. Cooper duly moved into the lead by the Bungalow as the pair headed into the pits.

Cooper’s second lap of 113.918 gave him a lead of over two seconds from Farrell with Barry Lee Evans holding third after his lap of 113.273 with Gary Vines running fourth after his second lap of 113.306 and Jamie Williams (112.479) completing the top five. With just over twenty seconds separating the top five riders it was clear that the pit stop would be crucial.

And so it proved.  Cooper was able to gain a further 3.4s in the pits on Farrell to lead by six seconds at Glen Helen on the third lap while third placed man Barry Lee Evans was timed at 51s, which increased the gap between him and the race leader to over 27 seconds.

Gary Vines also had misfortune in the pits with a thirty second speeding penalty, which dropped him to ninth by Glen Helen on the third lap and out of podium contention.  Spain’s Victor Lopez Santos took advantage to move into fourth just over two seconds behind Evans with Jamie Williams completed the top five a further six seconds behind the Spanish rider.

Cooper extended his lead to almost ten seconds over Farrell going into the last lap after posting 109.599 to Farrell’s 109.008 on the third lap with Barry Lee Evans (107.499) holding third, well behind the race leaders but almost five seconds ahead of Lopez Santos. Nick Jefferies, the 1993 Formula one TT race winner, moved into the top five ahead of Williams who was losing time at Cronk Ny Mona and Williams subsequently came in to the pits at the end of the third lap for an unscheduled stop and retired in the pits.

However, Darren Cooper was not experiencing any such misfortune and extended his lead to a decisive sixteen seconds at Ramsey as the leading pair headed for the mountain section for the last time.

Gary Vines, after his pit lane penalty, retired at Braddan Bridge on his fourth lap when his two stroke machine expired while David Lumsden, who also received a thirty second penalty for a pit lane infringement, retired at Quarry Bends when running sixth.

Cooper duly claimed the race win, eventually winning by almost thirty seconds in a time of 1:20.20.314/ 112.713 from Farrell (1:20.48.300/ 112.062) with Barry Lee Evans (1:21.03.841/ 11.704) clinching the final podium place.  Victor Lopez-Santos (1:21.06.955/ 111.633) and Nick Jefferies (1:21.47.342/ 110.714) completed the top five.

Scott Millar, who came off at Cruickshanks was taken by airmed to Nobles hospital complaining of pain in his shoulder, while Andy Fenton was taken by airmed to Nobles with possible fractures after his accident at Joeys.  Trevor Mathewson and Kevin Murphy came together at Ramsey hairpin with Mathewson reported unhurt but Murphy transferred to Nobles with a shoulder injury and fractures. John Turner was taken by airmed to Nobles for further assessment after coming off his machine at Glen Helen while Nigel Rea, who came off at the Gooseneck, was unhurt.
