Andreas Racing Association Ltd.

Statement regarding Jurby Airfield
31st January 2020

Andreas Racing Association (ARA) has been notified by the Isle of Man Department of Infrastructure (DoI) that, with effect from 1st February 2020, Jurby Airfield is now licenced to the Isle of Man Department of Economic Development (DED). The DED in turn proposes to allow the track to be used for motorsport events run by affiliated clubs with an appropriate permit issued by a recognised governing body.

The ARA has been affiliated to the Auto Cycle Union (ACU) since the club’s inception over 50 years ago; the ACU is the governing body regulating and sanctioning all motorcycle sport in Great Britain and the Isle of Man.

The ARA is therefore delighted that it’s programme of race meetings at Jurby Airfield is now secured, and we look forward to a full, exciting and well supported season of racing in the north of the Island in 2020.

RE: Statement regarding Jurby Airfield - ARA
Temporary arrangement for Jurby Airfield

A temporary arrangement to ensure continuity of motorsport activities at Jurby Airfield was announced by the Department of Infrastructure yesterday.

It confirmed that a recent procurement process for an organisation [Jurby Motorsport Management Ltd] to manage the airfield had been unsuccessful and this terminated on Friday of last week.

The former RAF aerodrome site has now returned to the control of the DoI’s public estates and housing division.

A temporary arrangement has been put in place to ensure motorsport events can proceed while an organisation is found to manage the Government-owned facility.

From this week, motorsport events planned for Jurby Airfield will be managed through the Department for Enterprise under a licence to occupy from the DoI.

The airfield will be available for motorsport events put on by an affiliated club of, and under a permit issued by, a recognised motorsport governing body. Bookings for non-motorsport events will not be taken during the interim period.

The Dept for Enterprise does not have access to a calendar of existing events and organisers are asked to email the motorsports team on motorsport@gov.im as soon as possible to ensure availability.

Any organisation that has made a booking and paid in advance should contact the facility’s previous managers to recover their payments.

The launch of a new procurement exercise will be announced on IoM Government’s procurement portal in due course.

JMML was originally created by Andreas Racing Association as a wholly owned subsidiary of the club and took on the management contract for Jurby from government in January 2014.

That agreement was for five years and expired in January 2019. JMML continued to operate Jurby on a roll-over basis for another 12 months after the previous contract ended, but government has now formally ended that arrangement.

An extraordinary meeting of Andreas Racing Association took place in October after several key members of the committee tendered their resignation.

A new committee was voted in at an AGM in mid-November and plans have now been announced for a full season of motorcycle road races at the venue in 2020 - precisely 50 years on from the inaugural season in 1970.
