SPORTSMEN RECEIVE FUNDS FROM THE SALE OF COMMEMORATIVE COVERS ISSUED BY ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE

Earlier this year, two of the Island’s most successful sporting achievements of 2006 were celebrated by Isle of Man Post Office, in association with Isle of Man Newspapers and the Isle of Man Sports Council, with the launch of two limited edition commemorative covers.

One was to honour the success of World Enduro Champion 2005 David Knight while the other to recognise the outstanding performance by this year’s Commonwealth Games team. The team was the most successful in the Island’s 50-year involvement with the event at which cyclist Mark Cavendish won a gold medal and clay pigeon shooters Dave Walton and Trevor Boyles brought home a bronze. Both David and Mark continue to take the world by storm and put the Isle of Man on the world map.

The covers were produced in limited editions of 275 each and both were signed, one by David Knight, the other by Mark Cavendish and sold out within a week. The profit from the sale of the covers was in aid of the Manx Sports Aid Foundation.

On Thursday 21st December at Postal Headquarters, Douglas, David and Mark along with Margaret Brown, Chairman of the Manx Sports Aid Foundation, received a cheque for the profits from the Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office Pamela M Crowe MLC.

Mrs Crowe said: "The Isle of Man is immensely proud of its sports people and we at Isle of Man Post Office were delighted to celebrate their glorious achievements in this way."

Mrs Brown added: "Manx Sports Aid Foundation is extremely grateful for this support and we will be using this money to help produce more champions like David and Mark."
