the first practice on Friday Evening 26th May and another session on Saturday
Afternoon 27th May. The six-race programme gets underway at 10-15 on Bank
Holiday Monday 29th May.
A record number of 114
competitors have entered for this years races an increase on the 1999 figure of
104, Competitors from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, USA France and Italy will
add an International flavour to the racing being joined by Welsh, Scots, Irish,
English and certainly be no means least the Manx.
With grids having to be reduced
from 40 to 32 this year, the Race Committee will have some tough decisions to
make regarding who will start and who will be reserves.
The Singles Race has 38 entries
(35 last year), the Senior - 34 (37), the 250 - 34(29), the Forgotten Era -
39(40) the Junior - 39 (36) and the Sidecar - 19 (19)
Top Classic Stars entered
include last years man of the meeting Bill Swallow, who is starting in all five
solo events, Also entered is the 350cc Winner Colin Rodgers from Northern
Ireland, Paul Coward who won the 250 Class from England as well as the surprise
Sidecar winner Bernd Tittler and passenger Andre Hohensee from Germany.
Opposition to Bill Swallow in
the larger Classes will come from the likes of Dave Pither, Asa Moyce, John
Loder, Denis Gallagher, Tony Myers, Meredydd, Derek Whalley, Karl Wilkie and
Les Trotter. In the Junior Class which this year has sponsorship from Quinn
Kneale, Colin Rodgers will have stiff opposition from Barry Wood, Neil Eatough,
Paul Coward, John Loder Chris McGahan, Mike Hose, Derek Welch and not
forgetting Bill Swallow, The 250 will see Paul Coward, Karl Hayes, Bud Jackson,
Terry Kermode, Peter Wakefield, John Lenton, Barry Wood and Roy Richardson
among the top runners. The Singles should also see a battle royal with as well
as Bill Swallow, we have John Loder, Tony Myers, 3 times previous winner Mike
Cain returning to two wheels after many years in the sidecar, and another
previous course winner Jim Curry who won two races at Billown in the late 60's
early 70's. The Post Classic Superbike will see Bill Swallow again start as one
of the favourites, Denis Gallagher, and local Brian Kneale who is mounted on an
RG500 Suzuki could also go well along with circuit newcomer Ian Pattinson on a
347 Yamaha, unfortunately top French Grand Prix Star of the late 70's Eric Saul
who had entered has had to withdraw after braking both legs in an accident at
Daytona earlier this year
The Club would also like to
thank the Department of Tourism for the tremendous help and financial support
that we receive from them to help put on this meeting.
