The strains of the theme music from High Noon could be heard drifting over Douglas Promenade as the world-famous White Helmets and the equally famous, but different, Purple Helmets weighed-in for their TT Week clash.

The two will be going head to head at the same event on Friday 11th June at around 9pm. In one corner are the White Helmets – the Royal Signals Motorcycle Display team – which consists of 30 highly-trained volunteer soldiers who tour the British Isles performing spectacular feats of balance, death defying crossover rides and acrobatics. In the other corner are the Purple Helmets who were formed 15 years ago and have added to the TT fun and atmosphere ever since.

Officials from the two display teams met at the TT Grandstand this week for a photo shoot and promotional opportunity ahead of next month’s event.

Sergeant Nick Pallis from the White Helmets said:

‘Without a doubt our skill, speed, timing and precision will be too much for the Purple Helmets.’

The latter’s promoter, Derry Kissack, countered:

'My men are all hand-picked and trained on Okells Ale. This is going to be bigger than the Ali-Foreman Rumble in the Jungle and we will come out on top.’

The photo shoot turned a little nasty when it appeared one of the Purple Helmets’ priceless 90cc Hondas had gone missing. Suspicion fell on their rivals who were thought to want to add it to their collection of Triumph 750s which perform their demonstrations. The Isle of Man’s own White Helmets, in the form of the Manx Constabulary, were called in to restore order – aided by Geoff Corkish MHK from the Department of Economic Development.

Said Mr.Corkish:

‘This David v Goliath showdown between two teams of highly skilled motorcyclists will be one of the highlights of the TT on Douglas Promenade this year. Visitors and locals are in for a treat with a programme which includes fireworks, motorcycle shows, fun days, air displays and a fun fair – not to mention other TT-related events taking place Island-wide.’

‘This week’s get-together was aimed at setting the scene for June 11th. It was all about having a bit of banter and fun. There was no malice at all – at least I don’t think there was, was there?’
