Bob Mac 1962 - ian huntly - 30-12-2011 It would be nice to commemorate Bob McIntyre in 2012, 50 years after he passed on.......I am aware he did not die as a result of an accident on the Isle of Man but he did do the first 100 mph lap (1957). I think something should be erected up on the mountain section of the course where we can see the coast of Scotland, similar to the positioning of the Guthrie Memorial...... RE: Bob Mac 1962 - ian charlton - 30-12-2011 Since the removal of the marshall,s box up at the bungalow,i don,t think there,s anything left to remind us of Bob,s greatness and the love and respect we all held for him. Possibly, probably, the real master of the mountain course,a fitting tribute to Mac is long overdue. Hope others in the know share your views Ian and erect something fitting to honour and remember The flying Scotsman. RE: Bob Mac 1962 - pat slinn - 30-12-2011 Ian, Race Mission and myself would contribute towards any memorial to Bob Mac. RE: Bob Mac 1962 - ian huntly - 30-12-2011 After Guthries there are two White stone walls on minor bends......... Could one of them be declared to the memory of Bob, with an un - stealable plaque ??? RE: Bob Mac 1962 - pat slinn - 30-12-2011 (30-12-2011, 11:01 PM)ian huntly Wrote: After Guthries there are two White stone walls on minor bends......... perfect Ian, who do we approach for permission for a memorial plaque to be put there. RE: Bob Mac 1962 - ian huntly - 31-12-2011 The powers that be...... I will sound it out I'm all for it...Do we start a fund raise once we have permission ?? Again do we stop at Bob...There are so many who qualify as well, we have nothing to commemorate Gary Hocking, Dickie Dale etc....... At least Bob has the 100mph lap to his name......... RE: Bob Mac 1962 - pat slinn - 31-12-2011 About ten years ago Race Mission researched the possibility for permission to build/finance a memorial garden or wall somewhere in Nobles park. Our idea was a memorial for all TT and MGP riders that were no longer with us. There were some very strong feelings for and against the idea, some of the against's thought it a morbid idea and has no place in the vicinity of the TT paddock, however these same people thought the same about the Race Mission tent in the paddock. some people wondered about the insurance implications if somebody was injured, eg, falling over something !. The for's were all for it, offering to contribute help, ideas and in a couple of instances quite considerable financial help. However it became obvious that after talking to some powers to be, and unofficially to a member of the house of keys that this idea would not get anywhere. After speaking to Bill Snelling he suggested a memorial at the Bungalow area, but some people thought that was out of the way and seemed to say Nobles park is the place for it. What do YOU think ?. I also received the book The Flying Scot some years ago. He was my first link to the TT. The sounds, the introductions by Graham Walker, all music to a little girl's ears all that time ago being transmitted across the miles, along the sea beds all the way to Australia. Will always be my hero. RE: Bob Mac 1962 - ian huntly - 31-12-2011 Enough said/-------------Lets do it !!!! RE: Bob Mac 1962 - ian huntly - 03-01-2012 I have made overtures to a number of people who have already pledged support. I have also consulted with Rosie Christian at the Sulby Glen Hotel who has given me the go-ahead to place a plaque on her wall. I now want some committment please.......and an idea what amount should be allocated to this project. I have been looking into suitable commemorative plaques this morning. RE: Bob Mac 1962 - Jeff Kirby - 04-01-2012 There already is a memorial wall http://www.ttsupportersclub.com/memorialwall.htm but I believe that permission must be obtained from the relatives of the competitor before a plaque can be attached Jeff Kirby RE: Bob Mac 1962 - ian huntly - 04-01-2012 .....................of course Jeff, there are a number of proceedures which have to be followed and we are looking into every one before taking up offers of donations or help...Once these criteriae have been filled we can start taking the whole project seriously. ......................yes, there is a memorial wall, but unfortunately a wall of names, no matter how famous these people have been while alive, does not mark specific milestones in TT history. Bob Mac not only did the first Ton lap on a 500 but also ALMOST did a Ton lap on a 250 only 4 years later. Some us think that this was milestone, the end of the Eurpoean monopolisation of the TT and the start of the Japanese era. A plaque is not the same as a memorial............. |
