Moto 3 bikes at the TT - Westers - 10-06-2015

With more and more Moto 3 bikes running in BSB, do you think we'll ever see them racing at the TT? I'm not sure we will unless they start to run Moto 3 at club races/the other major road race rounds. I know Cookstown run them in their races, but not sure about the other rounds - my impression is Supertwins are cheaper to run/buy than a Moto 3, so I guess that'll have a big factor in whether racers are willing to run a Moto 3 bike during a season, and hence whether race organisers bother to create a class for them.

Anyone in the know about these sorts of things?

I would love to see real racebikes at the TT again, but Moto3 have no hope of running as the class name was not dreamed up by  60s schoolboys and does not have "super" in it

Bit harsh there Piemuncher! I was going to say they wont let them in because the TT is for road based bikes.

A Moto3 bike competitive for UK use is £35k+, a top spec supertwin isn't far off that but a Moto3 bike is a little jewel made for the purpose of racing not a converted commuter bike.

How do you spend £35k on a supertwin,I built the fastest one in the country for £9k.

Moto 3  250 cc bikes would be good for the TT, it adds another class and.bikes that some of the smaller riders would be more competitive on. I also think from a cost point of view the Super Twins give some very good riders who do not have mountains of cash to spend get into racing and could be a very good stepping stone for bigger things if they prove their worth.

and if not wrong yours involved parts not allowed under tt rules
so it could be posible to maybe build better race bikes for less if they changed the rules slightly

MiniTwins are the cheap way in to racing. SuperTwins are more expensive than a basic 600 set up.

Moto3 will be a great class in time, i.e. when more bikes are available at reasonable cost. Drop one of the Supersport races to make way (go back to a single Junior race).

Mine was built to the first set of rules that are still as they were several years before the TT rules came out. The parts I used apart from the frame were cheaper than the parts you need for a supertwin because I could pick anything from any make,and didnt have to buy an complete ER and throw half of it away. There were 2 championship winning ERs for sale on Ebay for weeks,and James Neesoms Manx winning bike. All less than £9k. With a bit of rule tweeking the SVs would stand a chance. They are the best bet for a mini twin. I sell about 60 sets of SV rearsets a season to mini twin riders,and 2 ERs. Un tuned an ER is nowhere in mini twins. The Manx has been won by I think 2 Specials,2 SVs,and 2 ERs,maybe another look at the rules wouldnt be such a bad idea. I have no self interest because I sold the bike over the winter,we are back with 400s now for the Manx.

I'm trying to remember how much a brand new RS250 used to cost. Allowing for inflation, £35k for a moto3 bike sounds somewhere in the ballpark. In a few years when the second-hand examples start filtering through to the club scene, a moto3 TT seems like a definite possibilty. I hope it happens. I still can't get my head round "lightweights" that are heavier than the heavyweights.

They don't want anything less than 600cc due to the practice time available, what would the 250s practice with?.

If you want a cheap entry class what wrong with a stock 600,take a tuned motor as well and youve got 3 rides. Good starter class as well.

Does the TT really need another class of production-based 4-stroke IL4s though? It's samey enough as it is.

I know but isnt the TT Lightweight virtually an ER race? If you want real race bikes go to the Classic TT,its a grand do!

There's already 2x 600cc races. We need more diversity not more of the same. Moto3, with 125gp as well like in BSB.

I agree,we had diversity,but that was taken out of the TT in 05. The problem with Moto 3 is the cost of running one. £750 for a piston anyone? 125s yes,it worked in the past,cant see why not now.

I did say that a few posts ago. Where does this £35k come from? Clive will sell you a Honda for half that.

It's £21,300 including Vat from padgetts, I'm unsure what that includes, but if it doesn't include top brakes, suspension, ecu's and other performance bits it could easily rise to 30k+, then there's tuning and keeping the thing going to consider as well plus spares.

I think you can rule that out then. Does anyone make new 125s still? What about those little KTM single things theyre running at BSB.
