100th Senior TT - Ackerman - 19-06-2015

Apologies, I bet this has been asked a 100 times, but - if all goes to plan, in what year would the 100th Senior TT be held? The first was in 1911, wars, strikes, foot and mouth and weather have intervened but the 100th can't be that far off?

RE: 100th Senior TT - canamant - 20-06-2015

Isn't the Senior TT trophy the one awarded at the first TT race in 1907 ?

This year was the 96th event and as the Senior trophy has been awarded at each event (although maybe not called the Senior early on). Assuming the Senior never gets cancelled, 2019 will be the 100th awarding of the original Senior TT trophy.

The Senior trophy was donated to the Auto Cycle Club, now the Auto Cycle Union, by Joseph the Marquis de Mouzilly St Mars, the President of the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme in 1905-1906. His name can still be seen on the award. The Senior TT Trophy was first presented, to Charlie Collier, in 1907 who won the first TT Race.
The Senior Trophy was based on the Montague Trophy, awarded to the winner of the TT car races, which pre-dated the motorcycle TT, by the way Charlie Collier took the Senior trophy home as they did in those days

RE: 100th Senior TT - Ackerman - 20-06-2015

I read that the first Senior TT was only held in 1911, the first year of The Mountain Circuit, I'll do more homework on that! Also, this was the 96th event, but has The Senior been run at every event? I think the cancellation in 2012 was the first time it hadn't been run. So it seems there could be two or three potential Centenaries - 100th actual TT in 2019. 100th Senior TT in 2020 and 100th Mountain Course TT in 2023. At least three parties to gear up for, hope the Steam Packet are planning ahead!!

I'd bet it will make no difference. The only "must see" despite all these anniversaries was the 100th of the event (that was mobbed, and drained the year before and the year after of visitors); the 100th of racing on the Mountain Course seemed to make no difference to visitors. I'd be inclined to think, bearing in mind most people don't even plan their trip around the Senior (I do by the way, its my favourite), it won't be much of a party.
Be nice if it was.............with JM or MD taking the top step too.

I remember Hondas 50th anniversary being quite a big deal on the island, 1999? They put a lot of effort into the whole event (Apart from Suzuki stealing the advertising banners on the straw bales Smile )

RE: 100th Senior TT - c iom tt - 25-06-2015

Hondas 50th was in 1998, and one of the wettest TT we have had for a long time.
We also missed the Senior in 2001 for the foot and mouth as well.

Hmm..... it was a big deal, but I thought only to Honda, and paid for by Honda as I recall - they really went to town on it.

Yamaha had a big anniversary too at some point, which was a big deal, but again to Honda, who decided to put all their effort into beating Yamaha in almost every race, and then putting on a massive fireworks display to steal the limelight. I've completely forgotten which year that was.

In neither case did visitor numbers rise because of the occasion, that's my point I suppose - I've only ever seen the 100th year bring about a massive boost to numbers. Mike the Bike's return was the only other thing I remember bringing in a big influx out of the blue.

That said, I suppose it doesn't stop a party happening Icon_cool

RE: 100th Senior TT - Ackerman - 27-06-2015

Don't think we've decided the year Smile but I wasn't thinking of the visitor number side of things really, just the prestige of that particular milestone and the place such an event would hold in the history of Motorsport. There won't be room for many more visitors in 2019/20 if current growth continues!

If it were to happen would be interesting to see what machinery might appear

Yes it was 98 Mike and who came second in the production race splitting the fast Honda's and spoiling Honda's party.

Ha Ha!. Spanners,I'd give money to go back in time and check the sizes of certain front wheels.
Not aimed at you or Cap you understand.

RE: 100th Senior TT - AndyL - 01-07-2015

I have a T-shirt with all the Senior winners 1907-2012 on the back, and if things printed on T-shirts can be believed, then this year was the 95th.

1907-2015 would be 109 races if no years were missed. The missing years according to the T-shirt are:
WW1 1915-1919 (5 years)
WW2 1940-1946 (7 years)
2001 FMD outbreak
2012 cancelled
So a total of 14 years without a senior.

According to the TT database 1911 was the first year there was a race called the "Senior TT". 1907-1908 had single and twin cylinder races, and it looks like 1909 and 1910 had only one race. Apparently the current Senior trophy was awarded to the winner of the single cylinder race in 1907. I'm not sure if it was considered the trophy for that specific race, or if it was for the fastest overall - the singles were faster than the twins, less to go wrong I suppose!

RE: 100th Senior TT - Splashdown - 01-07-2015

When I was young, I always believed that Rem Fowler on a Norton won the first TT. Well, he did, but the current Senior trophy went to the winner of the single cylinder class which was Charlie Collier on a Matchless. I must admit, I don't know right now on what basis that was decided, I'll have to research it.

Something to research in the winter!
