Race numbers being painted on in the TT paddock

- Barry Wood - 18-01-2008

This is a wonderful atmospheric shot of a TT weigh-in as it used to be. At first I had to convince myself that it wasn't a modern day parade scene, as you don't often get colour photos from this era with such a clear quality, but the clothes, painting -on of race numbers, the white overalls of the scrutineer, the car in the background, all point to very early 60's. And is that an Ariel Square Four parked against the fence?
The gentleman on the bike, obviously the rider, looks like he could be a member of the Mafia, and initially I have been thinking along the lines of Italian riders of the era. But how many of them rode 7R's?
So, being a Cargo question, there was always a chance that he may be an Ulsterman. A quick flit through my old programmes uncovered the fact that in the 1961 Junior TT, Billy McCosh finished 22nd at 89.01 mph gaining a Silver replica and riding an AJS 7R. His riding number that day? 66!
Am I getting warm ? And did Bill send it to you? If I'm hopelessly wrong, no problem. A cracking picture and I enjoyed trying to solve it!

I've sent you the full size version Barry

And of course it's not one of Bills

- larryd - 18-01-2008

It's not Billy, Barry, and it's not the 60's :!: :!:

It is, however, a Square Four, although that won't help :!: :!: :!:

With those jampot rear suspension units and bellbottom trousers must be around 1952/4. But who not a clue

- Barry Wood - 19-01-2008

Well he looks like a foreigner Cargo, but I don't know who it is. But I look forward to finding out!!

- thewitch - 20-01-2008

Love the Riley in the background. I have a radiator shell for one of those in my bathroom (don't ask).

Ok here is another picture taken the same day as the first one in this thread

Bill Doran of course. I'm thinking 1953. But I don't have a 1953 TT programme. I have them back to 1957, then various other years back to 1939, but not 1953

- scruffy - 21-01-2008

PM sent Larry :!:

- larryd - 21-01-2008

And answered Brian :!:

- larryd - 21-01-2008

As a further question (and I've only just noticed this) would anyone like to have a punt at the identity of the chap to the immediate right of Bill Doran, with camera round neck :?:

- Barry Wood - 21-01-2008

Tyrell Smith :?: :?: :?: Smile

- larryd - 22-01-2008

I was wondering Cromie McCandless, Barry :!:

- Bill Snelling - 23-01-2008

The photographer is works Gilera, Mondial and Norton rider Cromie McCandless. In his latter years he lived a few hundred yards down the Glencrutchery Road.
If the initial picture is from the same race the 1953 Senior, the rider is G. Scott, anyone know his christian name?
In his only TT he finished 14th in the Junior and 23rd in the Senior on the same AJS, fifty five seconds slower in the Senior.

- larryd - 23-01-2008

You got it Bill - George Scott from Western Australia.

Did I not give you his Christian name when you were compiling your lists :?:
