RE: TT outright lap record racing machines
Shaun. Yes, I know about Steve Cull. The list I posted did not want to be complete. Only, I need to know if the info(=machines and engine capacities) I posted are correct and to complete them.
About Steve Cull. If you look at page 111 of the book "Honda - The TT winning years" by the late Peter Kneale and our Bill Snelling, you can see a beautiful shot of Steve Cull at the approach of Brandywell during the 1988 Senior TT race. The caption says: "Steve Cull, on the ex-Joey Dunlop NS500...".
I think this is a mistake as Cull's machine (as you said too) was the 3-cilynders RS500 and not the 4-cilynders NS500.
P.S.
Of course about Hislop I meant 1990 and not 1999 as I wrote because of a "lapsus calami". I'm going to do the correction editing my post.
About 1980 and 1981 outright lap record machines:
1980 - Joey Dunlop (115.22 mph) - Classic TT
- racing machine: YAMAHA TZ 750
- engine capacity: 747cc.
1981 - Joey Dunlop (115.40 mph) - Classic TT
- racing machine: HONDA RSC 1000 ?
HONDA BRSC 1000 ?
- engine capacity: 1062cc. (for the RSC)? 996cc.(for the BRSC)?
Who can confirm the 1980 info and determine the 1981 ones?

I'm wrong. Also the NS500 is a 3-cylinders as the RS500. But the former is the work machine and the latter is the private one.

Here you can see your hero during the 1970 Senior TT race while he is riding (in the air) at the bottom of Bray Hill (photograph taken from "The Isle of Man - An illustrated history 1907-1980" by M. Freudenberg):

John Williams closed the Isle of Man TT grand prix era in 1976 with a new absolute lap record in the Senior race with a 500cc. And he really deserved to win. I've never seen a shot of him during that race and I'd love to see it.
Hi Marco,
he deserved to win but he didn't because he ran out of fuel, pushing in from Governor's bridge and finally finishing 7th. I still recall his exhaustion and frustration at the Villa Marina prizegiving that evening.... another remarkable ride was the Senior TT in 72, where he was 2nd on his Arter Matchless after passing Alberto Pagani on the MV at the Bungalow, finally dropping out though with a empty tank...btw, there is a beautiful shot of his '76 ride in Nick Harris TT book

RE: TT outright lap record racing machines
That's not the pic I was talking about, but nevertheless evocative
Sorry I don't have a scanner and if I had, I' d wonder about the copyrights ?
Anyway, I have to correct my first post, since John didn't run out of fuel, trustable sources tell that the engine cut off at Governor's because he had gearbox trouble as well as clutch failure..
Refering to the '72 TT, Alberto Pagani (and Ago) were probably not taking risks, since Gilberto Parlotti crashed only a couple of hours before that very race. Anyhow, John's ride aboard the Matchless was brilliant, in '72 already a lot of 2-strokes were around.....

Many thanks for the shot!
About 1976, on iomtt.com database you can read that it was fuel but I think that your sources are more reliable;-). In any case you can find here:
http://snipurl.com/o1y81 [www_iomtt_com] a beautiful portrait of John.
Yes, Agostini raced the 1972 Senior TT race well knowing that is would have been his last TT race. He wanted to win _and_ to go home. Agostini was never able to beat (also because he did never had the reason to do it) the Mike Hailwood's 1967 TT lap record (20m48s.8=108.77 mph; 1967 Senior TT lap 2). But Agostini personal best TT lap (20m52s.0=108.59 mph; 1967 Senior TT lap 2) remained for 36 years i.e. until 2003 (!!), as the fastest TT lap made by an italian rider.
P.S.

Out of thread, but what was the last Italian bike to win a TT ? Sorry, I'm not much in today's racing, so SMBH's win in '78 springs to mind, any win between then and now ?
There were other three italian bikes TT win after SMBH's 1978 win. The following:
- 1984. 350 Historic TT - Steve Cull, Aermacchi 350cc.
- 1985. Formula II TT - Tony Rutter, Ducati 600cc.
- 1995. Single TT - Robert Holden, Ducati 560cc.
