SEELEY SAYS ‘SCHOOLBOY ERROR’ COST HIM DONINGTON VICTORY

Alastair Seeley took third place in Sunday’s Pirelli National Superstock 1000cc race at Donington Park, during the World Superbike meeting at the Leicestershire venue, which facilitated round four of the series.

The race, which saw the safety car deployed at half distance after Adam Jenkinson crashed out, was won by Hudson Kennaugh with championship leader Josh Elliott second. Third placed Seeley took the fastest lap on the Tyco BMW S1000RR.

Alastair Seeley:

“I was having a bit of argy-bargy with Elliott at the front and Kennaugh was just sitting behind us before the safety car came out halfway through. I tried to control the race from the front, but didn’t see the last lap flag as I was slip streaming Elliott.

“It was a schoolboy error as I also missed my pit board. I led all the way to the Melbourne Loop on the last lap, but as I didn’t know it was the final time, I wasn’t defending my line. Both of them came up the inside and I lost my drive up to Goddard’s. I thought I had another couple of laps, so was surprised to see the chequered flag. I’ll learn from it and hopefully from Snetterton I can start climbing onto the top of the box and reduce the lead to the top of the table.”

Philip Neill – Team Manager:

“I always admire a rider who can hold his hand up and accept a little bit of blame. Alastair rode a good race and showed the strength of the Tyco BMW S1000RR package, but we can’t be too hard on him as he’s given us some great wins this month. Third place isn’t a disaster, but as Alastair says, we will have to start eating into Elliott’s championship lead sooner rather than later.”

Result:

Winner – Hudson Kennaugh [BMW]; 2nd – Josh Elliott [Kawasaki] +0.473sec; 3rd – Alastair Seeley [Tyco BMW] +0.600sec; 4th – Richard Cooper [Kawasaki] +1.194sec; 5th – Luke Quigley [BMW] +4.802sec; 6th – Michael Robertson [Kawasaki] +5.628sec

Championship Points [after 4 rounds]

Josh Elliott 85pts; Hudson Kennaugh 82pts; Alastair Seeley 68pts; Adam Jenkinson 43pts; Luke Quigley 43pts; James East 26pts
