A local motorcycle rider’s memory is set to be perpetuated when the Mid-Antrim 150 returns to the road racing calendar next year.

Victor Gilmore lost his life following a crash in the Supersport 600 race at Killalane in 2010.

Although a resident of Ballymoney, Victor’s family are well known in the Ballymena area, while he also enjoyed a near cult following in the Czech Republic, where he was treated as a hero amongst race fans.

A member of the Mid Antrim club, Victor was a man who had an ever present smile and was always ready with help and advice to any newcomers.

Now Victor’s contribution to the sport has been marked by having one of the corners on the Mid-Antrim 150 circuit named in his honour.

With the blessing of the Gilmore family, what used to be known as Dunbought Corner will be renamed Victor Gilmore Corner.

Victors’s father Jim, his brother and sister, Jonathan and Jodie-Linda and his kids Craig and Jodie say they are very proud that Victor was being remembered in such a way.

“He would have been sort of proud, but embarrassed as well. Victor was never much of a man for a fuss,” explained Jonathan.

Victor’s will now be the first major corner on the lap now, as the paddock area has been re-sited to where it was for a couple of years, just after Alexander’s Jump.

The revamped Mid-Antrim 150 - which has attracted a title sponsor in JFM Haulage, is due to take place in April next year, making it the first road race meeting of the season.
