Peter Oates, one of the two Clerks of Course for the Southern 100 International Road Races recently visited Tallin and placed a Memorial Plaque on behalf of the Southern 100 Club close to the scene of Joey Dunlop’s fatal accident on 2nd July 2000.

The specially engraved plague recognises ‘Yer Maun’s’ achievements around the Billown Course between 1976 and 2000.

It reads:

Joey Dunlop M.B.E. O.B.E

6 times Southern 100 Champion

42 victories on the Billown Course on the Isle of Man

The ‘Master of Billown’ is gone but not forgotten

Fondly remembered by all in the Southern 100 club

Peter said:

‘Joey was a loyal supporter of the Southern 100 for nearly 25-years winning 42 races in total, including six prestigious Solo Championships, which has yet to be equalled, let alone bettered.

‘His last Solo Championship came in 1999 and he was due to defend his title in 2000 after racing at Tallin, but it was to be after his accident at Tallin.’

Peter explained it was extremely emotional visiting the scene where the official memorial is sighted, and he was very proud to be able to place the plague which recalled Joey’s racing achievements on the Billown Course on a tree along side many other tributes to the great man who held so much affection with all involved with the Southern 100.

He concluded: ‘It is hard to believe it is 15 years since that tragic day, Sunday 2nd July, but Joey’s racing performances around the Southern 100 circuit are as vivid as ever and will always be remembered - especially by those who were privileged to witness them.’
