Southern 100 Racing were shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic accident at the North West 200 International Road Races, which claimed the life of up and coming rider, Malachi Mitchell Thomas.

Malachi made his Billown debut at the 2014 Southern 100 International Road Races and created an immediate impression finishing second to Ramsey rider Conor Cummins in the 600cc class of the Corlett’s Trophy race and claiming the first of four Newcomers Awards for 14th position overall in the combined race with 1000cc machines!

The then 18-year-old took seventh place in the Radcliffe Butchers 600cc Race and on Championship Day, took sixth in the S&S Motors 600cc, and setting his fastest lap at 105.905mph, completing his debut year with another 14th position in the Manx Gas Solo Championship Race and first 600 to take the chequered flag.

At the Prize Presentation on Castletown Square, the likeable youngster received a total of four ‘Best Newcomers’ Awards, the Dr Pycraft Trophy; Southern Supporters Cup; the Castletown Traders Cup and the Brian Duffy Trophy.

In addition he received the Alan Hampton Cup for being the first 600cc machine home in the prestigious Solo Championship Race.

Race Secretary, George Peach said: 

‘Malachi certainly left a lasting impression on all who saw him race at the 2014 Southern 100 and he made many friends during his debut year.

‘He took a sabbatical from Billown last year, but he had entered the Blackford’s Pre-TT Classic Races this year in the Classic Superbike Race, making his Classic racing debut and was also returning in July for the Southern 100 with the John Burrows Team.’

Southern 100 racing wish to extend their sincere condolences to his parents, Kevin and Vicky, his family and friends of Malachi at this very sad time.

Malachi’s racing achievements, personality and charisma will ensure that he will remain in the hearts and minds of all racing fans and all who had the privilege to see him race or who had the pleasure to meet him.

It was certainly a pleasure and a privilege to have Malachi Mitchell-Thomas race on the Billown Circuit - R.I.P.
