Derek Ennett Seat Rededicated

Castletown’s Derek Ennett won the Junior Manx Grand Prix in 1954, two days later fellow ‘southside’ rider George ‘Sparra’ Costain won the Senior Manx Grand Prix.

That unique ‘double’ in the history of the Manx Grand Prix was instrumental in the birth of the Southern 100 Road Races in 1955, where Derek Ennett won the first race on the 4.25-mile Colas Billown Course, the 350cc.

In 1956 Derek was invited to join the legendary Italian Moto Guzzi team riding one of their Single Cylinder machines in that year’s Ulster Grand Prix where unfortunately he lost his life at an accident at Tornagrough.

Buried in Kirk Malew Churchyard, a seat was placed at the entrance to the Church in Derek’s memory by the then organisers of the races, the Southern Motorcycle Club.

Over the years, weather, wear and tear had taken its toll on the seat, the present-day race organisers Southern 100 Racing have restored the seat to its former state.

As part of the Annual Memorial laps and Church Service for the 2019 Southern 100, the seat was re-dedicated by the Club’s Chaplain Canon John Coldwell.

Prior to the re-dedication the Club President, Phil Taubman MBE gave an oration on Derek’s life and his and the family’s connection with Castletown.

Derek is still fondly remembered not only by the racing family but also the Castletown community and Isle of Man as one of their racing heroes.
