Council objects to new TT Grandstand bridge

Douglas Council’s executive committee has raised objections to a proposed new TT footbridge which would encroach on its land.

The Department of Infrastructure has applied (20/00081/B) to erect a replacement bridge near the Grandstand on Glencrutchery Road.

However, the council’s executive committee has written to planners to say the bridge, which would - like the previous one - descend into the cemetery, should not be open for 24 hours a day.

The committee, chaired by council leader David Christian
, also criticised the removal of mature trees and said the DoI had not consulted with the local authority before the application was submitted.

In the minutes for the committee, it is stated that trees are at risk from the application, a mature sycamore, a mature elm and a holly tree, all of which are visible from the road, and these ’contribute positively to the character of the local area’.

It added:

’Based on the information provided by the application, it was considered that the loss of the trees would far outweigh the perceived benefits of constructing a new bridge, especially as there was another crossing point less than 330m away at the top of Bray Hill.’

The plans for the footbridge showed the cemetery being open 24 hours a day to allow pedestrians to use the bridge at any time.

But the council claimed that ’no discussion had taken place with the council with regard to the cemetery remaining open to match the proposed opening times of the new bridge’.

Disappointment

Douglas Council, said in its response to the application that it does not want the gates to be unlocked for 24 hours as ’this could lead to the area being used for anti-social behaviour’.

The council expressed its disappointment that no prior consultation had taken place with the council in advance of the application being submitted.

If built, the footbridge will be a replacement for the long-standing blue one that was removed earlier this year after it was deemed unsafe.

Like the former bridge, it will cross the road from just inside Noble’s Park to just inside the grounds of Douglas Borough Cemetery.

However, unlike the former bridge, the proposed new one has a lift as an alternative to the climb up and down four flights of steps.

RE: Council objects to new TT Grandstand bridge
Shame. We watched a practice session there one night last year. It was more fun watching the security guard shouting and screaming at almost every punter that crossed over 'KEEP MOVING ON THE BRIDGE PLEASE'. She had the only voice I've ever heard that could drown out the roar of the Norton. Hope she got to lie in a darkened room for a while after that!
