John Hartle Memorial unveiled

Author: David Capper

The achievements of one of Chapel-en-le-Frith’s unsung heroes, John Hartle, were recognised in a recent ceremony in the town. A plaque dedicated to the modest Hartle, was unveiled at the New Inn in Chapel.

The plaque was the brain child of a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who meet regularly at their Club Headquarters in the New Inn. They felt that the former Isle of Man and Manx Grand Prix multiple winner should have some mark in the town where he was born.

Sadly John lost his life in a racing accident at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough following the sport he dearly loved.

The plaque was unveiled by John’s daughter, Lesley McLaren, ably assisted by broadcaster and journalist Julian Ryder.

The plaque can be viewed at the New Inn in Chapel-en-le-Frith.

The pictures shows long-time friend Peter Dale, Lesley McLaren (John’s daughter) and Julian Ryder
