2016 Spring Cup called off after spate of red flags

Today’s Bob Smith Spring Cup road races, the first meeting of the year at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough had to be abandoned on after a spate of red flags led to insufficient ambulance and medical cover at the circuit.

The feature race on Sunday afternoon was red flagged at the first time of asking after Lee Johnston went down heavily on the second lap at the entrance to the Memorial. The Northern Irishman was believed to be relatively unscathed but was taken to hospital for further checks.

On the restart, the race was only half a lap old when a serious incident occurred on the back straight, the fastest part of the circuit. Junior Manx Grand Prix winner Billy Redmayne and Dave Hewson were the riders involved but whilst Hewson was able to return to the paddock, Redmayne was immediately flown by airmed to Middlesborough Hospital.

Whilst in a serious condition, the Auto 66 club have issued a statement stating that Laxey’s Redmayne is now breathing on his own and his condition is improving.

With a lack of medical cover at the circuit, and after a lengthy delay, organisers announced at 4.35pm that the meeting was to be abandoned with the feature Bob Smith Spring Cup race now taking place at the Cock o’ the North meeting in July.

Saturday’s action, meanwhile, was severely affected by bad weather and cold temperatures that led to a distinct lack of grip around the 2.43 mile circuit.

Dean Harrison enjoyed the best fortunes, taking three wins and a second over the course of the two days on his Silicone Engineering Kawasakis.
