RE: MANX GRAND PRIX AND CLASSIC TT REVIEW CONFIRMED
I was never a fan of the Classic TT format which effectively created two separate race meetings in one. I have competed in both MGP’s and Classic TT’s and always thought that the whole Classic TT_MGP programme was unbalanced. When the Classic TT ended the paddock became very, very quiet and presumably the visiting spectators disappeared too, losing the Island income. Also the anomaly of Classic TT competitors paying no entry fees whilst MGP competitors paid was simply wrong. Changes were definitely required and this revised format is the outcome of the review.

Like Alfie Noakes I’m not convinced there’s the potential for a full grid of Moto3 and GP250’s. I see no reason why these classes couldn’t be combined with Junior Classic machines, provided the required qualifying speed was set appropriately and applied equally to all three machine types.

In addition, we all know that the Isle of Man isn’t known for it’s consistently warm, dry climate and the programme is very tight so, as Dogsbody points out, there’s ‘Not much wiggle room left if it rains though’. It’s all very well increasing practice time but two or three cancelled sessions will put all teams on the back foot.

As far as the Newcomers arrangements go when I first took part in the Manx in 1993, there were no special provisions and it never occurred to me that they were required. All riders are at least National Licence holders and therefore already deemed competent to take part.

Finally I’d like to see far less focus on ‘the stars’ and, hopefully, the demise of the Classic TT will address this. The MGP has always been intended as a stepping stone to the TT, not as a money-making opportunity to those who had their chance in June. By all means let them come if they want to but have them pay their way like the rest of us. The money spent on them could either be saved or used to give all the background people, marshals, scrutineers, administrators paddock organisers etc. etc. those unrecognised contributors to the event who make the races what they are, with some, not necessarily financial, reward. However, I must declare an interest here as I’ve converted from competitor to marshal.

Whatever the MGP becomes, I’m so glad it and the TT will return in 2022. I, and I’m sure all of us, have really missed these incredible events.

PS - I’m so happy that this forum is running again, I’ve investigated the alternatives and this is by far the best. All the credit is due to you Malcolm for operating the forum through some very difficult times. Many, many thanks for all your efforts.
