Local hero Paul Robinson, from Ballymoney, has helped launch the road race that perpetuates the memory of his legendary rider dad Mervyn Robinson.

The Armoy road races are set for their fifth running from July 21-27. Set up to commemorate the folk heroes of the 1970's Armoy Armada, the races have now become a top draw for riders and fans at a time when the sport is feeling the pinch financially.

That success is a tribute in itself to clerk of the course Bill Kennedy, brother of Frank Kennedy, who with brothers Joey and Jim Dunlop and their brother-in-law, Robinson senior, formed the Armada and thrilled fans on the north coast roads before accidents claimed Joey, in Estonia, and Mervyn and Frank at the North West. Jim Dunlop, thankfully, remains with us.

Paul Robinson dedicated a North West 125 win, the last at the event, to his dad three years ago and with his cousins William and Michael Dunlop will be out to maintain the honour of the extended family dynasty at Armoy in July.

Coleraine firm RiverRidge Recycling are back on board as title sponsor for the July event with Bill Kennedy of the organising Armoy club, commenting: "It's hard to believe this is our fifth year but I am pleased to say we are delighted with the progress to date and I am confident that we can build on our previous successes.

"RiverRidge Recycling is back on board with us this year. This is the third year that the management team of this company has sponsored us and without their valued and very welcomed support, the Armoy Road Race would be very different indeed.

"It's also great to see a local company continuing their involvement in supporting the race and wider community."
