Britain’s Scott Redding may not have won a race in Moto2™, but the Marc VDS Racing Team rider does lead the standings as the championship heads to Jerez. Pol Espargaro has ground to make up following his uncharacteristic crash in Austin.

As expected, Moto2 has delivered some highly dramatic racing so far this season. In Qatar, it was pre-season title favourite Espargaro versus Redding as Takaaki Nakagami picked up a career-first podium finish. On to Texas a fortnight later, a well-judged ride from Nico Terol saw the Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2 rider clinch a first race win since his triumphant 125 season back in 2011. Following the demise of Espargaro, Tuenti HP 40 teammate Esteve Rabat picked up second place from Redding’s teammate Mika Kallio and Technomag carXpert’s Dominique Aegerter, who has now collected two fourth place finishes in as many races.

Following on from the brand-new territory of Austin, where the action took place over a mammoth 20 corners, the fraternity now heads back to more familiar ground. At Jerez, the field will counter a greater number of sweeping bends as opposed to the tight hairpins of Texas that caught out so many over the course of the weekend.


The NGM Mobile Forward Racing team is always one to watch, particularly as their Speed Up bikes have shown great top speeds so far. Mattia Pasini did well to finish eighth in Austin, ahead of teammate Alex de Angelis, while Simone Corsi almost always proves to be a threat. QMMF Racing’s Anthony West will hope to capitalise on his good form so far, along with the likes of JiR Moto2’s Mike di Meglio, Blusens Avintia’s Toni Elias, Desguaces La Torre SAG’s Marcel Schrotter and teammate Xavier Simeon on the Desguaces La Torre Maptaq machine.

Two Spanish wildcards will be taking part in the form of Targobank CNS Motorsport’s Alex Mariñelarena and TSR Motorsport’s Dani Rivas. Not helped by the mixed weather forecasts currently on offer, nerves will certainly play their part – and that includes for 20-year-old Redding, who carries a four-point advantage.

Moto2™ practice for the Gran Premio bwin de España begins on Friday at 10:55am local time (GMT +2), coming after sessions for sister series Moto3™ and MotoGP™.
