Moto2™ championship leader Scott Redding has moved ahead in the second Free Practice session for the Gran Premio bwin de España. The Marc VDS Racing Team rider led Tuenti HP 40’s Esteve Rabat, who had comfortably headed the opening period this morning, and Italtrans Racing Team’s Takaaki Nakagami.

The Circuito de Jerez is the first European venue of the season, following on from the opening pair of races in Qatar and Texas. Although the start of the day may have been typically overcast, the sun came out to provide all but ideal track conditions in the afternoon. However it was shining neither on Louis Rossi (Tech 3) nor Mike di Meglio (JiR Moto2) as both Frenchmen suffered falls.

With Redding heading Rabat by the fine margin of 37 thousandths of a second this afternoon (but the Spaniard’s morning lap time still quicker) and Nakagami less than a tenth further behind, the performance of the day arguably went to Tom Luthi. The Swiss Interwetten Paddock Moto2 rider was fourth quickest on his return from a Valencia testing accident in which he suffered a broken right arm; although he had attempted a comeback in Austin, the pain proved too much.

Luthi’s fellow countryman Dominique Aegerter was fifth for Technomag carXpert, ahead of the two winners of the opening rounds: Nico Terol (Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2) and Pol Espargaro (Tuenti HP 40). Aspar’s Jordi Torres, Blusens Avintia’s Toni Elias and Desguaces La Torre SAG’s Marcel Schrotter completed the first ten.

Moto2™ action in Jerez resumes on Saturday morning, as the third and final practice session commences at 10:55am local time (GMT +2).
