Changes to Southern 100 Race Programme 2019

Southern 100 Racing, organisers of the Isle of Man Steam Packet  Company Southern 100 International Road Races are to make a  number of changes to their racing classes for the 2019 event which  takes place Monday to Thursday 8th – 11th July.

The main change is the dropping of the ‘Ultra-Lightweight’ 125cc/400cc class from the programme along with the discontinuation  of the Support races.

However, with the increasing number of entries being received for  600cc machines, the organisers are to include an additional race for  this class.

Clerk of the Course, Peter Oates explained:

‘The Club took the decision to drop the 125/400 races, mainly due to the ever-falling number of entries being received, not only at Billown but at other ‘pure’ road races and concerns by the Technical Officials of the age and standard of the machines being presented for pre-race examination.

‘To try and keep the classes to a high standard expected at an International Road Race, the club have over the past few years included the 450cc machines and more latterly the Moto3 class, but neither have taken off as was hoped.’


Mr Oates continued:

‘On the positive side, the 600 entries are increasing year on year, which we have endeavoured to accommodate with additional Support Races, so the Club has made the decision to add an extra race to the programme to incorporate the riders who wish to race their Supersport machines on the Billown Course during the Southern 100. This will mean though that due to the time factor the Support Races will not now be in the schedule.’

‘Since 1955, the Southern 100 race organisers have successfully evolved the various classes as they have been introduced to road racing, then superseded them as required by competitors and other rules and regulations as they are formulated, and we will continue to move with the times as road racing has done in the past and continues to do so.’


The first 125cc race at the Southern 100 was run in 1961 and was won by Dan Shorey, the class was dropped after the 1964 races and returned in 1990 and has been run every year as an individual race and also run concurrently up to and including 2018, whilst the 400cc race was also introduced in 1990 and has continued annually.

The full Race Programme for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 International Road Races 2019 will be announced at the Official Media Launch in February next year.

Interesting comment about the age and condition of the machines Being presented for pre race examination.

Using that logic we wouldn't have any classic racing? surely machines are either prepared correctly or they aren't, regardless of age?

They should promote a race for 300cc bikes as they seem to be increasingly popular and based on the quality of racing in this years world championship there should be some good racing too.

I agree that the WSB 300 class has the potential to be a good 'lightweight' class for the roads.

That said, I would also like to hear Moto 3 bikes on the roads

With the demise of 600 supersport manufacture, WSB dropping superstock 1000, supertwins being a 'roads only' race class, I think that this change will be the first of many in the coming years
