I suspect his 'I must beat Rossi' thoughts overshadowed the 'I need to just follow Rossi and be World Champion'.

He needs to choose which thought process to follow, one will earn him the World Championship, the other will end in frustration and tears.
I was there many times a few years ago, returned in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. SUPPORT THE MGP
