Mallory Park race track future thrown into doubt

The future of a popular Leicestershire race track has been thrown into doubt after the firm that operates it went into administration.

Mallory Park (Motorsport) Limited (MPML) has been put in the hands of administrators following a long-running dispute over noise levels from the circuit.

Last month the company was successfully prosecuted by environmental health officials from Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.

In August, the company was fined £2,500 and ordered to pay £23,000 costs after being found guilty of five charges of breaching noise level restrictions.

The council said the company was not adhering to an agreement that set the number of annual noisy race days at 92.

The company said the agreement, signed in 1985, was too rigid and restrictive.

The company yesterday said the court case led to a number of race events being cancelled so the 1985 terms could be met but that was not deemed financially viable.

In a statement, MPML’s parent company British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) said: “Following the court case, MPML immediately implemented the highly restrictive conditions of the 1985 notice, thus effectively reducing the circuit activity to two days per week.

“Significant losses were being incurred which no business can sustain.”

BARC said it had developed a recovery plan for the track by working with the council but that depended on the owners of the land, Titan Properties Ltd, reducing the rent.

BARC added very regrettably, despite intense work by the MPML board, the land owner did not make a substantive offer to allow the recovery plan to proceed.

“British Automobile Racing Club were keen to support MPML and indeed would have supported MPML to ensure all its trade creditors were paid.

“To that end, it needed the support of the landlord with a sustainable rent but, regrettably, this was not possible to achieve.”

Nobody from Titan Properties was available for comment last night.

A testing session scheduled for Wednesday and a planned race on Sunday have been cancelled but all other fixtures remain in the diary for the time being as the administrators seek a solution that would keep the track running.

Administrator Ian Robert said:

“I will be working with all the stakeholders to ensure that Mallory Park will see racing again.

“I hope the administration process can assist in finding a solution which will be beneficial to all parties concerned.

“Although it is early days, I am hopeful that, once a solution to the lease is found, all of the company’s creditors should receive a substantial dividend which I understand is very much the driving force behind the continued support of the BARC.”

The council’s chief executive Steve Atkinson said it was unfortunate the recovery plan had not been agreed.

He said: “It needed a bit of give from the land owner but they would not budge.

“This is unfortunate. We want racing to continue and there was a proposal to resolve the issue.

“It was to have fewer days (of racing) but more lucrative days and that would have meant less noise for residents.

“We were to consult residents on that and we still have that agreement in our pocket for the future.”

The council has been criticised by racing fans, of whom some 34,000 have previously signed a petition lodged with Prime Minister David Cameron, calling for the venue to be saved.

Mr Atkinson said: “Nobody’s saying we have got it entirely right in the past two years.

“We want racing to continue as many businesses need Mallory Park.

“I would say it is not over yet.”

Mr Atkinson met MPML bosses yesterday and hopes to meet the administrator in the coming days.
