Tyco Suzuki’s Guy Martin won a thrilling Supersport race at the Cookstown 100 on Saturday, narrowly holding off a late charge from Michael Dunlop.

Martin seized the lead on the opening lap and made a break as Dunlop got held up.

The Ballymoney rider quickly forced his way into second place and began to reel in Martin, reducing the deficit to less than a second on the final lap.

Martin, though, managed to hold on by just 0.13s to take the win from Dunlop, with newcomer Dean Harrison a superb third.

Dunlop earlier made a winning start to the 2013 Irish national road racing season with a victory in the Open race.

The 24-year-old beat Martin to take the honours on his Hunts Motorcycles/McAdoo Honda Fireblade.


Behind Martin, Dublin’s Derek Sheils was third on the CD Racing Kawasaki ahead of Michael Pearson (Team Hotties BMW), Jamie Hamilton on the Vauxhall KMR Kawasaki and course rookie Harrison from Bradford.

William Dunlop did not start the race on the Milwaukee/Chris Dowd Yamaha R6.

Ballymoney man Paul Robinson won the 125cc race from Sam Wilson after early leader William Dunlop retired on his Delaney Honda.

Dunlop, however, made amends as he took victory in the restarted 250cc race on brother Michael’s TSR Honda from Sam Wilson and Saintfield man Davy Morgan.
