Bike fans leave in their droves after the NW200 was cancelled due to heavy rain

The 2&4 Wheel Motorsport Steering Group is urging road racing fans to back a proposal to enable more flexible Road Closing Orders in the future to combat bad weather.

A public consultation for the amendment to the current legislation ends on Monday, October 7.

The need for the option of switching race meetings to an alternative day was highlighted this year, with inclement weather forcing the cancellation of the North West 200 for the second time in three years, while the Dundrod 150 event was lost due to heavy rain.

The proposed change to the current road race legislation would mean that race promoters could, with the approval of the DRD, bring forward or defer a practice or race day to a pre-advised ‘contingency practice/race day’.

A maximum of two contingency days per event would be permitted.

Alan Drysdale, Chair of 2&4 WMSG, said:

“Northern Ireland is home to some of the world’s best road races and these bring about significant benefits for the local economy. In order to safeguard their future, it is vital that all motorsport enthusiasts take this opportunity to respond to the public consultation.”

Written comments on the DRD’s proposal and draft Bill should be forwarded by email to rmpb@drdni.gov.uk

or by post to
