The Classics and Ultra-Lightweights were first out, although a couple of Lightweights were permitted to go at the front of the field, having had severe mechanical trouble which meant they had not qualified – Daniel Williams from Sutton Coldfield and Mark Waddell from Randalstown, both riding 250 RS Honda two-stroke twins.

As had been the case most of the week, problems again beset the organisers of the Manx Grand Prix practices. This time the delay was caused by a serious road accident at the Duke’s 32nd Milestone in the late afternoon. A car and a motorcycle were understood to be involved and a large quantity of spilled oil had spread in and around the area. This had to be attended to Highways Department cleansing wagons.

The fifth round of the 2007 World Superbike Championship began today at a sun-drenched Assen Circuit in The Netherlands. Last year's wet weekend was a distant memory as the HANNspree Ten Kate Honda riders took to the 4.55km track for the first qualifying session. James Toseland secured the fastest lap time of the day, while team-mate Roberto Rolfo qualified in fifteenth place.

James Toseland (Winston Ten Kate Honda) made a very positive start to the final round of the championship, running out second fastest at the same circuit he won the 2004 title on, despite concentrating more on machine set-up for race conditions than going for a single blitzing lap. The track was wet in the first session and delivered less grip than during a recent test in the timed session in the afternoon. Toseland is out to score an overall second in the championship in 2006, and a grandstand battle is promised, as his rival for that placing was the quickest rider on day one, Noriyuki Haga.
